Thriving Throughout History

The Texas Longhorn became the foundation of the American cattle industry by claiming first rights in the untamed, newly discovered Americas more than 500 years ago. In 1690, the first herd of cattle was driven north from Mexico to land that would eventually become Texas. By the Civil War, millions of Longhorns ranged between the mesquite-dotted sandy banks of the Rio Bravo to the sand beds of the Sabine. Most of the Longhorns were unbranded, survivors of Indian raids, scattered by stampedes and weather, escaped from missions or abandoned after ranch failures.

"There's people from all walks of life in the Longhorn breed. When they get to those sales they're all just alike. I think the people in the breed are the greatest people I've ever met. We've made a lot of friends that we've really enjoyed, people we wouldn't have met otherwise, who are true friends now."

Texas Longhorn Breed Attributes and Market Advantages

REPRODUCTIVE EFFICIENCY

The Texas Longhorn bull’s reputation for the easy and uncomplicated birth of a vigorous calf is undisputed among knowledgeable ranchers. The tall lean Longhorn shape with narrow head and shoulders makes first birth for a beginning mother a far less traumatic experience. The U.S. Meat Animal Research Center's Germ Plasm Evaluation Program, Cycle IV Phase 2, evaluated 1,905 births comparing 11 breeds. The Texas Longhorn proved superior with the highest unassisted birth rate of all breeds (99.7%) and the lowest birth weight (71.3 lbs.). These old, nature-fixed, time tested qualities are making extra profits for professional ranchers through reduced labor and more live, saleable calves. These low-stress birth traits profit owners allowing the mother cow to quickly re-breed.

In addition, the Texas Longhorn is disease and parasite resistant.natural immunity developed over the centuries means fewer veterinarian bills and less maintenance for today’s cowman.
